Back before it was cool to say you liked Steven Universe and this wiki was in it's last few weeks of it's development stage, I made a thread about the things in the show I didn't like. http://steven-universe.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:43942
It seems that as my love for the series grows, so does my list of things in it that bug me. This is pretty much a continuation of the old thread (although I've gotten over points 1 and 4). Note that due to there being a hiatus and me posting this at night, it's likely that some of this will fall into blind ranting. Also note (and I feel I may be attacked if I don't say this) that Steven Universe is pretty much my favorite western animation show ever. However, I think critically. I'm not gonna love a show if I can't tear it to pieces and find the flaws in it. So without further delay, let's begin:
5. The hiatus. Pretty obvious, right? I felt like I should just get this one out of the way.
6. Plot completely overrules common sense. Now I've met some pretty stupid people in my life. The wonderful thing about the way our world is set up is that most people who's idiocy reach higher than average levels are usually killed in ways no sensible person would ever have to deal with. Steven Universe tends to avert this. If the plot demands something happens, the characters will have to comply. To give an example, in Indirect Kiss we have Amethyst falling off the cliff. Her falling of the cliff is fine by me. Her falling and not turning into a bird is what bothers me. Like, she clearly had enough to switch into an owl or something (and Story for Steven shows us she can fly as said owl). Fusion Cusine gives us the gems forming Alexandrite to go to dinner. Funny since a few episodes back, Pearl and Amethyst wouldn't even consider fusing with each other until Steven got eaten. Did Garnet not see this would be a bad idea? If I weren't so eager to get to the next thing I don't like, I'd fill this paragraph with even more reasons.
7. Steven singing. Now before you attack me give me a chance to explain. I don't hate Steven's voice. I don't even hate that he has the most songs. However, I happen to like the voices of Greg, Amethyst, Pearl and Garnet more (and in that order). Pearl's voice actor is Deedee Hall, who has the voice of angel. Pearl's one song in the series so far started off with her singing, the Steven had to go and butt in. Then Steven overshadowed the duet. Same for Amethyst's On the Road. Both were supposed to be rather emotional songs but Steven kinda ruins it for me. I'd of had a fit if he decided to chirp in for Stronger Than You.
8. Pretty much all of Reformed. T-Shirt Cannon seems to be the fandom's least favorite episode (save for the ones still complaining about Say Uncle). I can understand why; T-Shirt Cannon was a really boring filler episode. Thing is, T-Shirt Cannon was just boring. Reformed, on the other hand, was just a bad episode. To save time I'll simplify my issues with it: It threw away two or three really good theories, the monster was bland and irrelevant to the plot, Amethyst's angst was both randomly thrown in and poorly executed, Amethyst is killed surpringly easily in this episode and the only reason why is that the plot demands she die multiple times, we get a reformed Amethyst but it seems like Rebecca's way of tricking us into not noticing how litterally nothing else happened in the episode. Speaking of episodes...
9. So. Much. Filler. This is kinda what screwed SU in the beginning of the series. In early season 1, there was no real plot. It was a cute show but it seemed like a random monster of the week show (which it kinda is but not really). It already had the disadvantage of growing up in the shadow of Adventure Time and constantly being compared to it. It was during the Stevn Bomb that the show really carved a name for itself. Unfortunately, there hasn't really been a good episode in season 2 save for Joy Ride. Most have been filler. Part of that is due to the Steven Bomb messing up the order schedule, but that still doesn't make it any easier to watch.
10. The breakfast monster. Frybo is universally considered to be the most terrifying thing to come out of the show and I agree. However, the breakfast monster is the SECOND most terrifying thing. Mainly cause I haven't the slightest idea what it is. Remember that this show has a theme with its monsters. All of them are gems (Frybo technically counts since he was brought to life by a gem). One day, Garnet comes back from what was probably a really cool offscreen mission. She brings home some demonic scroll that needs to burned and anything that holds its likeness needs to be destroyed as well. Whatever this thing is, it isn't a gem and that wouldn't bother me if it was ever explained WHAT it is.
11. Fandom jokes. All of them suck. ALL of them. Especially the ones about Peridot. They got old quick and people are still using them. Whenever a new one is made (like tiny Peridot) it gets overused in less than a week. Does this count as a problem with the show? Probably not. All I know is it's gonna be funny when Peridot reminds all these Dorito jokers that she's a villain who's very willing to kill and proves this by stabbing Steven in the throat, rendering him unable to interfere with Pearl's heartwarming "get well soon" song.
That's all for now. If there's anything in the show that bugs you as well, feel free to rant away! Freedom of speech and all that jazz. Later.
