Speaker Dialogue
[The episode begins on a TV screen with an advertisement.]
(A steak is seen hitting a flame. Young Marty sings a remake of "Comet")
Marty From the moment the meat hits the flame, my stomach is growling without any shame.
(A tomato slice, two pickle slices, and lettuce fly across the screen. A burger, fries, and a can of soda are shown in the next scene.)
Marty And I know in my gut, it's been worth the $5.95.
(Marty takes a bite out of a burger and winks at the camera.)
Marty Would you like a burger from Pepe's Burgers?
[Transition scene to Greg's Van outside the Crystal Temple with Greg, Pearl, and Steven who watches the commercial and gasps in awe.]
Steven Whoa!
Steven Your song is on TV!
Greg Yeah. Apparently, Marty sold my song as a burger jingle, and now I'm filthy stinking rich.
Steven [Sighs] The sweet stench of success.
(Pearl looks at the TV curiously.)
Pearl What is this?
Greg You know, when Rose came to my concert the night we met, I was playing this song.
Pearl This is what did it? Burgers?
Greg It wasn't about burgers back then. She probably would've like this, though, right?
Pearl [Sighs] She would have loved it.
(Pearl walks away, upset.)
Greg [Groans]
(The TV is heard turning off.)
Steven So, what are you gonna do with all the money?
Greg I don't know.
(Greg and Steven climb into the back of the van and Greg grabs his guitar and begins to play Don't Cost Nothin' with Steven.)
Greg Bright, sunny day don't cost nothin'. Light, summer breeze, don't cost nothin'. What do I do, with all this money when the only thing I want is you?
(Steven shrugs.)
Greg Pallin' around don't cost nothin'. Singing a song don't cost nothin'. How do I spend, all this money? I'd rather just spend time with you.
Steven You could buy a house... and a car.
Greg I guess that I can, but I've already got a van. I could put you through college.
Steven But I'm with the gems all the time.
Greg I could buy you all the finest courses online.
Steven What if we took a trip?
Greg Hey, you think?
Steven Yeah, I do! We could take a vacation. We could go somewhere new.
(Don't Cost Nothing ends and up-tempo music plays as they begin to sing Empire City.)
Greg I know a place that's always exciting! The show and the sights and the lights that are blinding! Empire City! I'm talkin' Empire City! The streets and the sounds and the buildings towering! Subways that run from Brooklyn to the Bowery! Empire City! Let's go to Empire City!
(Greg and Steven sing together as they run into the house to get Pearl.)
Steven We don't need money!
Greg I know a place that's always exciting!
Steven But could be funny!
Greg The shows and the sights and the lights so blinding!
Steven So let's go today!
Greg The streets and the sounds and the buildings towering!
Steven Just point me the way to...
Greg Subways that run from Brooklyn to the Bowery!
Steven Empire city!
Greg Empire city!
(duo ends here)
Steven And let's bring Pearl!
(Empire City ends.)
Greg What?!
Pearl ... I don't know. Past experiences have taught me that three is a crowd.
Greg [whispering] Steven, me and Pearl haven't gotten along that well since uh -- well, since I started dating your mother.
Steven Aw, come on! We're all a big family. It'll be great. Just you, me, Pearl, and don't forget mom.
(Steven pulls up his shirt to reveal his gem. Greg and Pearl gasp in response to the awkward situation)
Greg Ugh.
Pearl Huh?
[Transition to Empire City as an orchestra plays fanfare.]
(Greg, Steven, and Pearl enter a hotel called Le Hotel. Greg goes to the counter and rings the bell and give a card to the desk clerk. Steven then appears and puts a stack of bills on the counter. Mr. Greg starts.)
Desk Clerk Hey, shake a leg!
Hotel Employees Hey, shake a leg!
Desk Clerk It's Mr. Greg!
Hotel Employees It's Mr. Greg!
Desk Clerk And he's here to spend his dough all over the town!
Hotel Employees He's got the bucks.
Greg I've got the bucks!
Hotel Employees It's all deluxe.
Greg It's all deluxe! When you're dining out with me, it's the finest steak and brie. And if I break a table, it ain't no-- (breaks the table) Whoa! Just bill it to my bank.
Desk Clerk A hundred bucks?! Gee, thanks!
(The hotel employees take Greg, Pearl, and Steven to the elevator and up to the penthouse. Steven and Greg change into tuxedos with top hats and play in the pool. Pearl puts on a tuxedo with a top hat.)
Pearl I must admit...
Steven and Greg You must admit.
Pearl ... it's a perfect fit.
Steven and Greg You look great in it!.
Pearl And those fountains I found wasteful are actually quite tasteful. This city's got its charm, unlike that termite-ridden barn. And any time with Steven makes for a delightful evenin'.
Greg You're having fun!
Pearl More or less.
Greg So dance with me. just say--
Pearl No!
(The musical stops with Pearl embarrassed about it.)
Pearl I... I mean... mean, *sighs* maybe later...
(Pearl walks away.)
Hotel Employee Boo! You ruined the song!
Greg (Hands over cash to one of the hotel employees) Sorry, guys. Thanks for singing with us.
(Camera focuses on Pearl who's walking toward the window)
Greg Don't worry about it, kiddo. It's always been this way.
(Steven looks at Pearl sadly as the scene transitions into night time.)
(Pearl walks into the bedroom where Steven and Greg are sleeping on the same bed. Pearl looks at the bouquet of roses by the bedside and sighs.)
(Pearl smiles as she begins to sing It's Over Isn't It.)
Pearl I was fine with the men who would come into her life now and again.
(Pearl puts on her top hat and picks up a rose.)
Pearl I was fine 'cause I knew that they didn't really matter, until you.
(Steven wakes up.)
(Pearl walks out to the balcony.)
(Pearl jumps mid-air and spins.)
Pearl I was fine when you came, and we fought like it was all some silly game.
(Pearl leans on the glass edge of the balcony.)
Pearl Over her, Who she'd chose. After all those years, I never thought I'd lose.
(Pearl lets her hat roll down her arm.)
Pearl It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? You won, and she chose you, and she loved you, and she's gone. It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?
(Steven gets up.)
(Pearl jumps onto the balcony wall, putting her top hat back on.)
Pearl War and glory, reinvention.
(Pearl begins to sword-fight using the rose.)
Pearl Fusion, freedom, her attention.
(Pearl spins and stops, holding the rose out.)
Pearl Out in daylight, my potential.
(Pearl walks across the wall, then does a backflip)
Pearl Bold, precise, experimental.
(Pearl spins and does the splits, then lays on the wall while looking at the sky.)
Pearl Who am I now in this world without her?
(The clouds form into silhouettes of Rose, Pearl, and Greg.)
Pearl Petty and dull with the nerve to doubt her.
(The Rose cloud, which was formerly holding the cloud Pearl's hands, turns to hold the cloud Greg's hands.)
Pearl What does it matter? It's already done! Now I've got to be there for her son!
(Steven jumps off the bed, and Pearl jumps off the wall)
Pearl It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over?
(Pearl puts her hands on the balcony wall.)
Pearl It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over?
(Pearl holds up the rose.)
Pearl You won, and she chose you, and she loved you, and she's gone!
(Pearl throws the rose she was holding high into the air, and the wind carries it off the balcony. A single tear falls from Pearl's eye.)
Pearl It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on? It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?
(A shooting star flies through the sky as the music fades out.)
(Pearl walks back into the room. Steven is sitting by the bed while Greg is sitting on the bed with his back facing to Pearl.)
Pearl Greg! You were... awake?
(Greg puts on a white coat and walks away.)
Greg Nothing's gonna fix this, is it?
Pearl Greg!
(Greg exits the bedroom.)
Greg I'm sorry you had to be around me.
Steven Dad!
Pearl I shouldn't have come along.
Steven No. This is exactly why I brought you.
(Greg is shown eating cherries out of a cup in the hotel lobby.)
Greg [Groans] Cherry man.
(Greg eats a cherry and throws the stem into the cup. Steven clears his throat from behind Greg and is shown holding hands with Pearl. Pearl is smiling awkwardly. Greg gets up from the stool. He and Pearl look away from each other. A le hotel worker begins to play Ragtime music, and Steven walks up to the musician and offers them a handful of cash which causes the musician to walk away gleefully.)
Le Hotel Worker Ooh! Roo-doo-doo-doo, roo-doo-doo-doo!
(Steven cracks his fingers and begins to play the piano.)
Steven Why don't you talk to each other? Why don't you talk to each other? Just give it a try.
(Pearl and Greg approach Steven and look at each other.)
Steven Why don't you talk about what happened? I know you're trying to avoid it, but I don't know why. You might not believe it.
(A spotlight shines on Steven.)
Steven You might not believe it, but you got a lot in common.
(Greg and Pearl slide closer to one another as the former turns orange, and the latter turns blue.)
Steven You really do.
(Pearl and Greg sigh as the background turns pink.)
Steven You both love me, and I love both of you.
(Greg, Steven, and Pearl begin to cry. Steven's tear falls onto the F-natural piano key, growing into a rose. The rose transitions into a purple background. The rose flies away, and the camera pans down, revealing Greg and Pearl speaking to one another while lying down.)
Greg Look, if I were you, I'd hate me too.
Pearl I don't hate you.
Greg But I knew how you felt about Rose, and I stayed anyway.
Pearl That wasn't the problem.
Greg Then, what was?
(A single rose petal falls into the water, causing ripples.)
Pearl She fell in love with you.
(Greg and Pearl sit up, looking at each other.)
Greg Well, you know Rose.
Greg and Pearl *laughing* She always did what she wanted.
(Tear beads form in their eyes.)
Steven I know you both need it.
(Pearl stands up and offers a hand to Greg. Greg takes the offered help, and they begin to dance.)
Steven I know that you both need it. Someone who knows what you're going through.
(Steven and the piano fly across the screen.)
Steven And you might now believe it. You might not believe it, but you got a lot in common. You really do. You both love me, and I love both of you. You both love me, and I love both of you.
(The lighting goes back to normal, and the Le hotel staff pop out from behind tables, cheering. The receptionist runs over to Greg with a covered platter in hand. He uncovers it, revealing a bill.)
Receptionist Le bill.
(Greg takes the bill and looks concerned.)
Greg Ugh! Tailor-made suits. Those cost somethin'. Room with a view.
(The bill unfolds, its tail reaching the ground)
Greg Those cost somethin'.
Pearl (putting her shoulder on Greg) Dancing with you...
Greg Don't cost nothin'.
Pearl Why'd we even come? We could've done this at home.
(Steven begins to laugh, and the group goes outside and starts to load up the van.)
Pearl Singin' a song don't cost nothin'. Or was it palling around don't cost nothin'.
(Steven shakes his head)
Pearl (sweating) Getting it wrong!
Greg Don't cost nothin'.
Pearl (shrugging and laughing) I tried.
Greg I'm surprised you remember any of it.
Pearl What can I say? It's catchy.
(Steven is shown slouching in the back seat with eyes closed)
Steven It's over, isn't it? It's over, isn't it?
(Steven opens his eyes. Pearl and Greg are shown talking in the front seats)
Steven It's over, isn't it?
(A sign saying "Now leaving Empire State" is shown as the van drives away. A sign saying "Welcome to Jersey" is shown on the other side of the road.)
