I don't know what'll happen in the future, but if something dangerous comes along, I don't want to be a burden. I want to help! I want to be there for Steven, to fight by his side! The Earth is my home too, can't I help protect it?

Connie Maheswaran is Steven Universe's best friend-turned-girlfriend, and a member of the Crystal Gems who debuted in the episode "Bubble Buddies". After meeting Steven, she slowly began to learn about him, the Gems, and their past. Growing a strong bond with them, Connie decided that she wanted to help him and the Crystal Gems whenever danger arose in the Earth, training how to fight using a sword with Pearl since "Sworn to the Sword". She eventually becomes a skilled combatant and often aids the Gems during times of conflict.

Years later, Connie begins to devote most of her time to studying and applying to colleges. She sticks by Steven's side as he deals with his years' worth of suppressed trauma. After helping Steven cope, Steven and Connie decide to meet up with each other as she tours the country on college tours, and he tours the world to find himself. It is revealed that the two are officially dating by the end of the series.

Appearance

Connie is a young Indian-American[1] girl with dark brown skin and a slim figure, and is slightly taller than Steven. She has a prominent nose with black eyes with thick eyebrows and has dark brown puffy hair that varies in length.

From her debut to "Dewey Wins", Connie's hair was waist-length. At some point following her fallout with Steven in the aforementioned episode and prior to their reconciliation in "Kevin Party", she had her hair cut down to a chin-length bob and added bangs. Following the two-year time-skip between "Change Your Mind" and Steven Universe: The Movie, her hair has since regrown to shoulder-length while retaining her bangs, and she wears part of it back with hair clips.

Connie wore a pair of magenta glasses with rose-colored lenses until Steven's healing saliva fixed her eyesight in "An Indirect Kiss". She continued to wear the empty frames until the events of "Nightmare Hospital", no longer carrying them afterward.

Connie is usually seen in a variety of different outfits and dresses, including light blue, green, and white clothing: In the first intro, she wears a white-mint green dress, a sunhat, and peach-colored boots with no socks. In the second intro, she wears a white, button-down, collared tank top, gray button-up shorts, her pink glow bracelet, and peach sneakers with white bottoms, laces, and socks. Since "Kevin Party", Connie has started wearing a more stylish and slightly mature style of dress.

During training, Connie often wears a purple fighting outfit with a red bandana around her waist. She is barefoot, and her arms are covered with white gauze. On missions involving outer space travel, Connie usually wears her father's pale brown jacket, which has fur inside and a patch on the left sleeve. In "The New Crystal Gems", Connie temporarily wears Steven's outfit of a salmon-pink star shirt and blue jeans.

As of the movie, Connie is now taller in height, almost the same height as Steven, with slightly thicker limbs and a differently-angled nose. She also wears a white blouse and blue shorts. Later in the film, after attending space camp, she wore a blue flight suit.

Throughout Future, Connie appears in a variety of clothes, most notably a white (or light orange) blouse with denim shorts and sneakers.

Personality

Bubble Buddies (021)

Connie is a curious girl who is attentive to detail, preparing herself for future events such as the upcoming school year or a mission in the wilderness, but can get distracted if she finds something more interesting like reading Buddy Buddwick's journal or spending time with magical company. Her hobbies include reading, violin playing, and formerly tennis playing. Connie is usually level-headed but sensible, convincing Steven about his obsession to certain topics and let them go such in "Beach City Drift", but she feels guilty to the point of notably changing her behavior, including hitting an innocent student in "Mindful Education". Learning that some things are natural, she decides to confront her emotions by making amends, clearing her mind and understanding not to let her emotions cloud her thoughts by keeping them in. She passes this knowledge onto Steven, assuring him he had to be honest about how bad his feelings were so he could move on. "New Crystal Gems" shows Connie's leadership skills when she told Peridot and Lapis to be themselves and organized their efforts to fix the damage they did. "Change Your Mind" brings out this aspect of her personality, as she helps Steven convince Blue and Yellow to ease up on their stifling rules and traditions so they would try to convince White Diamond to do the same.

Connie has grown used to the strange dynamic of her friendship with Steven despite her initial uncertainty of it, reacting passively awed and only comments that she loves hanging out at his place when the Gems destroy one of Peridot's robonoids in front of her in "Marble Madness". She can be a bit deadpan at times, joking about cutting off Steven's hand and in that same instance quickly understands that by poking/tickling Steven she could provoke a reaction from Rose's Secret Armory in "Lion 2: The Movie". "The New Crystal Gems" demonstrates her eagerness to leap into action and adventure, asking Steven to wait for her so she can go into space with him, though this fails as he and the Gems had to leave immediately or risk losing track of Blue Diamond and his father forever. "Dewey Wins" displays an emotionally vulnerable side and a sense of integrity for Connie, who, while genuinely happy to have Steven back safely, is also deeply hurt by his choice to give himself up to Homeworld, leaving her and everyone else worried over his fate while also breaking his promise to her that they would always be a team. She becomes upset when he tries to downplay the situation and disregards her feelings (possibly to avoid facing his own and the harsh reality of the situation for the time being) and decided to take some time away from him so the two could process their respective feelings about the incident alone, remaining silent towards him for a few weeks, until they eventually reconciled in "Kevin Party".

Originally shy and introverted, Connie rarely stayed in one place for long due to her parents' lifestyle and thus had been unable to form lasting friendships, which left her frequently feeling lonely. Her parents were very strict and didn't allow her to participate in common childhood activities, such as eating donuts or anything with trans fats and organize her daily activities. By this time, tennis was the only thing that she remotely enjoys in her life. This attitude had led her to flat-out lie about Steven's non-nuclear family, due to paranoia at how her parents may react. Despite her obedience to her parents, she wasn't above exploiting loopholes, such as not buying snacks at a movie theater, but instead bringing them from Steven's home. She ate a donut when they weren't present in "Crack the Whip". Connie's friendship with Steven eventually gives her more confidence, eventually standing up to her mother about her strict upbringing and rules in "Nightmare Hospital", even revealing her involvement in magical affairs. She isn't afraid to barge into the Beach House while shouting "Surprise!" and have around Beach City with Amethyst and Steven, showing how comfortable she has gotten around the Gems. "Kevin Party" shows nearly full-circle just how far she has grown as a person, laughing and talking with other party guests, something she would never have been able to do at the beginning of the series. Her more carefree attitude and comfort towards Steven when he feels he had made everyone miserable by abiding by Homeworld's conformities and traditions to impress White Diamond in "Together Alone" caused her to convince him to dance much to his reservation, an inverse of their usual personalities and actions in the episode "Alone Together", which leads to them accidentally fusing into Stevonnie and unintentionally causing an uproar that winds up ruining the ball. This continues in "Escapism" when she consoles a despondent Steven over their consequent imprisonment and the Crystal Gems' poofing and inadvertently inspires him to use his psychic abilities to call for help on Earth.

"Sworn to the Sword" shows a more confident and aggressive side to Connie's personality when she learns sword fighting. Due to Pearl's negative reinforcement, she began to display a reckless side, but this was quickly put out by Steven. It highlights her strong feelings for beloved ones through her dedication to becoming a knight for Steven. "Gem Hunt" continues to shown her confidence and dedication to the Crystal Gems in how she pushes her to split up to hunt the Gem monsters and is the one to lead when she and Steven hunt the second monster through the forest, while respecting and obeying Pearl. Despite all her training and preparedness, Connie froze during an encounter with one of the Gem monsters they are hunting, choosing to call Pearl via Steven's walkie-talkie in the end. She later confides in Steven and Amethyst about freezing during her first mission in the next episode, causing Amethyst to tell her she should stop overthinking things and follow her instincts in battle, just adapting to win. She takes Amethyst's words to heart as she fares far better when the two of them along with Steven and Lion encounter Jasper and her two Gem monsters, bravely confronting her and prevent her from shattering Amethyst as Stevonnie. After Amethyst regenerates, she tells her she was right about how she should follow her instincts. In "Reunited" she has grown as a fighter, leaping into action and tries to attack Blue Diamond with Lion to free them when the rest of the Crystal Gems are incapacitated by Blue's pathokinesis attack, continuing to fight alongside them even her sword was broken.

Steven Universe: The Movie, taking place two years after the end of the fifth season, shows how much Connie's feelings for Steven have grown, as shown at the start of the movie, she waits for him to return from Homeworld and kisses him on the cheek before leaving for space camp, and is quick to return on Lion after learning of the danger posed by Spinel. She later helps the other Gems save Beach City's citizens from the poison from Spinel's Injector. During this time, she expresses concern for Steven during his final clash with Spinel, especially after the battle causes the Injector to explode, and relieved to find him alive and safe in the aftermath.

"Bismuth Casual", Connie's first major appearance in Steven Universe Future, shows full-circle how far Connie has come since her introduction, as she is revealed to have made friends outside of Steven and is shown to be somewhat close to them. However, she also makes it clear that she still considers Steven her best friend, as shown when, after he expresses his fears about them drifting apart, she reaffirms their bond by fusing with him and winning a best-skater contest as Stevonnie.

"Together Forever" and "Growing Pains" both show the depth of Connie's maturity. In the former episode, after her brief date with Steven, despite being geniunely touched by his romantic gestures (a picnic in the spot they first met each other and a song expressing his desire to always be with her), she turns down his proposal that they marry and live as Stevonnie permanently both due to their young ages and her desire to retain her individuality, while also insisting that they have plenty of time before they take such a huge step in their relationship. In the latter episode, she checks in on Steven to see how he is holding up in the aftermath, and, after witnessing his powers going out of control, persuades him to have a medical check up by her mother, while also notifying his father of the situation. When Steven's powers go completely haywire after recalling his failed proposal and he blows up at her that he can't be around her at the moment, she calmly tells Steven she will be there for him when he's ready, showing growing concern over Steven's deteriorating mental state while also keeping her distance from him until he is ready to talk about it.

I Am My Monster 133

The final three episodes show how much Connie's leadership abilities have developed and how deep her love for Steven runs. "Everything's Fine" shows her expressing concern for him after he dodges her questions about his condition and unexpectedly cuts off their first contact since the events at the hospital, and then visits his home and tries to help Steven's family in an intervention for him. While she is shocked by some of Steven's revelations (him not telling the Gems about going to the hospital, shattering Jasper, and nearly doing the same to White Diamond) and eventual meltdown and transformation into a Gem Kaiju, she nonetheless remains determined to help him. "I Am My Monster" shows Connie taking charge (similar to how she did back in "The New Crystal Gems") after everyone (Greg, the Crystal Gems, the Diamonds, and Spinel) starts to break down and blame themselves for Steven's transformation, citing that while it very well may be at least partly their fault, now is the time for them to pull together and help Steven just as he has always helped them, instead of moping about and feeling sorry for themselves for failing to before. Later, as everyone, even the Cluster, embraces Steven with love, she is the last to do so, promising that she and everyone else will take care of Steven just as he has always done with them, before sealing the deal with a kiss, which finally reverts him back to normal. She then looks over Steven along with everyone else as he wakes up and emotionally breaks down. In "The Future", taking place a few months later, Connie has seemingly entered an official relationship with Steven, with them making plans to see each other while he travels around the country and (possibly) finds a place to settle down permanently and she continues her college plans, and then sharing their first on-screen kiss just before he leaves Beach City.

Abilities

Natural Abilities

  • Strength: Connie has impressive strength for a girl her size, being able to lift and carry Steven when he was weakened from having his gem removed.

Skillset

  • Swordsmanship: As of "Sworn to the Sword", Connie has become skilled in the art of sword fighting with Pearl as her mentor. She can fight swiftly with light attacks or with power in heavy attacks. This allows her

to rapidly perform several hits, as well as counter and block attacks efficiently. Due to being ambidextrous, she can fight with equal skill with either hand. Her prowess is enough to temporarily hold her own against Gems like Topaz.
    • Tag-team combat: Due to the close bond they share, Connie can coordinate her swordplay perfectly with Steven's shield techniques, such as fighting back-to-back being able to defend and attack simultaneously or being catapulted from his shield for a powerful lunge attack.
  • Wide Intellect: Connie is shown to be very intelligent for her age, knowing a lot about boats from observation and reading very hard books, both fictional and educational, which give her an extensive vocabulary. She can write backward, seen in the short amount of time it took her to write "Harpoon Gun" on the inside of a bubble. Her analytical skills allow her to find loopholes in her parents' many rules, notice and remember important details, and ask perfectly timed questions in regards to the Gems' strange situations. Steven Universe Future shows that Connie's intelligence and studying are paying off as she is going to cram school and getting ready to enter college early.
    • Survival Skills: Having prepared herself from a book about it 20 times, Connie has very impressive survival abilities in the wilderness. She has adopted these skills, perfectly able to locate a spot to hide from the Gem Monsters as well as make a healthy Vitamin C-rich tea out of pine needles.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: In addition to her swordsmanship, Connie possesses some hand-to-hand combat skills, presumably through her combat training under Pearl. She is able to grab a fellow student at her school by the arm and throw him to the ground, breaking his arm in the process.
    • Heightened Reflexes: Connie's reflexes have been honed to such an extent that she reacts to a perceived threat before she knows what she is doing, attacking a fellow student who bumped into her without realizing it until after the act.
  • Musical Talent: At her mother's insistence, Connie practices violin playing on a daily basis. She can play the instrument and sing at the same time, as shown in "Mirror Gem."
  • Tennis Proficiency: Connie is shown to play tennis in "Lion 2: The Movie", which later translates into her prowess in sword fighting.

Save the Light

  • Slash: Connie rushes towards her target and attacks them with several hits from her sword.
  • Protect: Connie stands in front of an ally and blocks all damage and counter-attacks.
  • Sword Storm: Connie gives several strikes against a single enemy dealing heavy damage.

Weaponry

  • Rose's Sword (formerly): Bismuth's "finest piece of work", able to easily destroy the physical form of a Gem, but unable to shatter the gemstone itself. Its design allows it to both cut and thrust efficiently. She also uses Rose's scabbard. In "Nightmare Hospital", the sword and its scabbard are given to Connie by Steven because she is learning how to sword-fight. Since pleading her mother to change her "No Swords" rule, took Steven to follow her to work to secretly obtain the sword, and convince her mother after saving her from the Cluster Gem patients, Connie has used the weapon in all subsequent appearances, using it in combat situations and during her sparring matches. Despite its immense size, she is seen comfortably carrying the sword on her back and drawing it over her shoulder. It is unknown if this is due to the sword's magical properties or if Pearl's training helped her achieve a level of strength fit to use it. In "Reunited", Rose's S

word was broken by Blue Diamond. The piece including the hilt was eventually given to Steven or the Gems and placed on a display in Steven's house.
  • Connie's Sword: As of "Change Your Mind", Bismuth gave Connie a specially-forged sword for her. The sword features a golden pommel, a purple hilt, a gold star emblem at the blade's base, an aqua chappe and a crystalline pink blade. It has enough strength to cause visible damage to the Diamond Mech.

Fusions

  • When fused with Steven, they take on the personality and form of Stevonnie. Via this fusion, Connie is theoretically able to fuse with full Gems.[2] Stevonnie is the first known fusion between a human and a Gem.

Relationships

Priyanka Maheswaran

I just wanted to be a good mother. I-I just wanted to protect you.

—Priyanka Maheswaran, "Nightmare Hospital"
Fusion Cuisine 167

Connie being scolded by her parents.

Connie is very loyal and obedient to her mother. While her mother tends to be strict, she wishes the best for her and wants her to be smart, orderly, and healthy. Connie closely follows her orders but does occasionally exploit loopholes or even lies to her to get away with something if necessary. In the episode "We Need to Talk", Connie reveals that her parents don't know of her adventures with Steven: Despite her eyes being healed by Steven, Connie took out the lenses of her glasses and wore the frames instead because she wanted to avoid confrontation with her parents and optometrist about this, something which ironically her mother doesn't notice. This may be because of her fear that her parents will prevent her from seeing Steven due to the huge risk she willingly submits to every time they hang out.

Nightmare Hospital 231

Connie's mom accepting her for who she is.

"Nightmare Hospital" explores Connie's relationship with her mother in more detail: Priyanka is very strict with her daughter, enforcing many rules on her that she never retracts for any reason. As a result, Connie is prone to lying to her about her adventures with Steven. Priyanka remains distrustful of Connie when they and Steven are cornered by Gem fusion experiments at the hospital. However, after the ordeal, she agrees to be more accepting of Steven's influence on Connie's life and much less micromanaging about Connie's activities. In "Gem Hunt", it is inferred that her parents have allowed her to go on a mission with Steven and Pearl, asking Steven to take pictures to document the event. It's confirmed in the podcast that the Gems, particularly Pearl, have discussed with Connie's parents about their rules regarding Connie's role on the team. This happened again during "Legs From Here to Homeworld", but in a more different context.[3]

Doug Maheswaran

You are silly, but that's why I like hanging out with you. I've got enough serious things going on in my life. Sometimes I just want to spend time with my dad.

—"Doug Out"

Doug Maheswaran shares his wife's protectiveness and well wishes of their daughter. As such, Connie is shown to hold her father in similar regard, caring for him deeply and respecting his commands, yet on occasion exploiting loopholes and lying if necessary. Connie's relationship with her father is explored in "Doug Out". Like his wife, Mr. Maheswaran has become aware of Connie's involvement in magical missions and is shown to be accepting of it. He appears to be less strict and more easygoing with his daughter than Dr. Maheswaran, casually conversing and joking around with Connie and Steven. Connie enjoys spending time with her father for this very reason, his more laid-back nature providing an enjoyable contrast to the serious affairs in her life. She sometimes uses his jacket on missions.

Crystal Gems

Connie is on good terms with the Crystal Gems, who were excited to meet her in "Bubble Buddies". In the podcast, Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey say the Gems give Connie special treatment due to her relationship with Steven as his best friend, fusion partner, and dedicated combatant.[3] In addition, it was confirmed that she joined the group in "Rocknaldo", likely originally as a trainee member in "Sworn to the Sword".

Steven Universe

I want to be a part of your universe.

—"Full Disclosure"
Alone Together 065

Connie and Steven embracing each other leads to Stevonnie.

Steven first saw Connie about a year before the start of the series during a parade. He saw her drop her bracelet and decided to keep it in his freezer so he could return it the next time he saw her. She also recalls seeing him on his father's float, mentioning the soap bubbles in his hair. He becomes her first friend. Although Connie sometimes feels like her life is rather mundane compared to Steven's, they are currently good friends, and share a mutual crush on each other as seen in "An Indirect Kiss" and "Alone Together" (in the latter of which Steven and Connie accidentally fuse, forming Stevonnie). Connie is frequently shown to be affectionate to Steven, occasionally in a romantic way. (e.g. "An Indirect Kiss" when she leaned in for a kiss, and in "Steven's Birthday" when she rested her head on Steven's chest after their slow dance). Connie has demonstrated that she cares deeply for Steven, such as in "Full Disclosure" when she repeatedly called and visited him to make sure he was okay, even going as far as to say she wanted to "be a part of his universe". She also showed displeasure at Steven's attempts of indirectly attempting to break up with her via text messages, confronting him and urging him that if he really wanted to break up with her, he should at least say it in person. Steven ultimately relents, stating that he still wants to be friends with her; Connie accepts Steven's reconciliation.

Since "Sworn to the Sword", Connie has shown interest in joining Steven in his adventures with the Gems, training with Pearl to defend him and become his knight. To further prove this statement, in "Steven's Birthday", Connie mentions not caring what height or age it seemed like Steven is, and that she would want to hang out with him no matter what. She also panicked when she thought Steven reverted into a zygote (or that he shrunk out of existence to simplify). "Beach City Drift" shows that along with their love for each other, they have a strong partnership through their interactions and discussion over their feelings towards Kevin, and the ease with which they fused into Stevonnie. Their personalities complement each other well - with Steven counting on Connie for her good sense, intelligence and down to earth mannerisms; while Connie relies on Steven's bravery, emotional support, and unique insight which has helped them both grow stronger as a pairing, and helped shape Connie into the person that she is today."The New Crystal Gems" shows her devotion to Steven in that she was ready to go into space with him on a moment's notice, and that she instantly agreed to protect Beach City for him while he was away. Her speech towards Lapis and Peridot is a result of her exposure with Steven and is proof of how a figure like Steven can inspire someone like Connie to express what they could not have done before. The episode also shows the new level of comfort in her relationship with him. In "Ocean Gem" she said that she felt weird being in his house when he wasn't there while in the latest episode she felt comfortable not only staying at the beach house by herself but also wearing his clothes while pretending to be him. The episode also gave her a slight insight into what Steven goes through with the Gems on a daily basis via her interactions with Lapis and Peridot.

In "I Am My Mom", Steven tells Connie he loves her before leaving for Homeworld with Aquamarine and Topaz. This scene also shows that Connie is terrified and angry at his decision as she shouts "don't you dare" to him as he prepares to leave, forgetting his promise that they would face problems together. After Steven returned home in "Lars' Head", she becomes glad that Steven has returned as she, the Gems, and Greg run up to hug him. However, in "Dewey Wins", Connie expresses that she feels betrayed that Steven gave himself up to Aquamarine in "I Am My Mom", instead of continuing to fight alongside Connie as he promised. Steven obliviously attempts to get her to look at the bright side of the situation, arguing that everything is fine since no one got permanently hurt, frustrating Connie to the point where she resignedly leaves on an equally angry Lion. When Steven finally realizes how much his surrender hurt Connie, and calls and texts her repeatedly to try and make amends, she considers responding, but can't figure out what to say, and eventually decides it best to settle their problem in person, but is too late to visit Steven before he leaves for a vacation home with no cell service in "Gemcation", and for unknown reasons, seemingly doesn't attempt to visit or get in touch with him again for the remainder of their estrangement (even after Steven stops attempting to reach out to her on his father's advice to give her space). In "Kevin Party", a few weeks later at Kevin's party, despite appearing to be genuinely having a good time with the other guests both before and after Steven's arrival, Connie expresses how much her friendship with Steven still means to her, becoming upset, agitated, and worried when he deliberately ignores her attempts to get his attention so they could reconcile and seems to only want to hang out with Kevin and his friends (though this was only due to him taking Kevin's advice to bait her into coming over to him to talk), which leads her to conclude that Steven has given up on them reconciling at this point, and has decided to drop her as his best friend and move on with a new crowd. When she and Steven finally do talk to each other, she apologizes for leaving him in the dark for so long, explaining that she wanted to respond to him, but an inability to decide on how-to, along with other circumstances, got in the way. Steven, in turn, apologizes for giving himself up and not taking Connie's feelings into account, and the two of them reaffirm that they are still "jam buds."

In "Lars of the Stars", Steven and Connie travel through Lion's mane to take a care package to Lars, and find that he and the Gems are known as the Off Colors are now a space crew trying to return to Earth. Steven reunites with Lars, introduces Connie to the Off Colors, and the two deliver the package to Lars. When Lars later has a breakdown after learning that Sadie is now in a band with Steven and the Cool Kids, and assumes that she is having such a good time to spite him for all the times he mistreated her and let her down, Steven and Connie set him straight; they tell him that Sadie does still care for him and is very worried for him, but has to keep going in her life, just like Lars has to keep going in his as he tries to get back to Earth. They finish by reminding Lars that he and Sadie are best friends and would never do anything to hurt each other, fusing into Stevonnie in the process. They remain fused for the rest of the episode and all throughout the following episode, "Jungle Moon", the latter of which goes over the course of at least several days as they work to survive until Lars can find them; this indicates that since the events of "Kevin Party", their bond has not only recovered but is now stronger than ever.

In "Reunited", Connie attends the Ruby-Sapphire wedding with her parents and later participates in the battle against the Diamonds even when the gems are incapacitated for a while, in which her sword is broken by Blue Diamond. After Steven is knocked out cold, Connie tries to wake him, but he manages to communicate with her via spiritual means and convinces her to guard his body as he tries to talk down Blue and Yellow Diamond from the spiritual plane he is in. In "Legs From Here to Homeworld," following the battle, Connie sticks with Steven and the Crystal Gems, mostly observing as the Diamonds rejoice in finding Pink Diamond (aka Steven) and learn more about the consequences of their final attack, but still goes along with them to Homeworld to try to convince White Diamond to help cure the Earth Gems' corruption. She is last seen with the Crystal Gems after Steven is taken to see White Diamond, much to her dismay. She and the Gems later reunite with Steven in the following episode "Familiar", and learn of his intentions to throw a ball to help bring White Diamond around to help them. In "Together Alone", Connie helps Steven, the Crystal Gems, and Blue and Yellow's Pearls plan the ball and is begrudgingly allowed to attend as his "pet" due to her status as an organic being. Later, during the ball, when Steven feels that he's made everyone miserable by caving into Homeworld's stifling traditions to impress White Diamond, she comforts him and convinces him to dance with her despite his reservations about it, which leads to them accidentally fusing into Stevonnie, and unintentionally causing an uproar that winds up ruining the ball, getting the Crystal Gems poofed, and then thrown into a prison tower as punishment. In "Escapism", Connie comforts Steven as he mopes over how their mission has gone wrong, and when Steven gets the idea to use his psychic powers to travel to Earth to find help, she remains with him to watch over his body, staying with him to the point where she falls asleep with him in her lap prior to his return. In "Change Your Mind", Connie helps Steven free the other Crystal Gems and convince Blue and Yellow to ease up on their stifling rules and traditions and try to convince White Diamond to do the same. She fights White Diamond alongside the other Crystal Gems, receiving a new sword in the process. Later, she fights to defend Steven inside the Diamond Mecha when all the other Crystal Gems are either incapacitated or mind-controlled and helps Steven reunite with his gem after White Diamond removes it.

In Steven Universe: The Movie, which takes place two years after the events of Change Your Mind, Connie, now fifteen, begins to openly express her growing feelings for Steven; she waits for him to return from Homeworld and kisses him on the cheek before leaving for space camp. Later, when Lion, sent by Steven, notifies her of the danger posed by Spinel, Connie quickly returns with him to help fight the renegade Gem, and help save Beach City's citizens from the poison from Spinel's Gem Injector. During this time, she expresses concern for Steven during his final clash with Spinel, especially after the battle causes the Injector to explode, and is relieved to find him alive and safe in the aftermath.

In "Bismuth Casual", Steven and Connie go with Pearl and Bismuth to a roller rink to have fun. While there, the two run into her cram school friends Patricia and Daniel. Steven makes an awkward impression on them, and not knowing how to skate, repeatedly urges Connie to go hang with her friends instead of helping him; he later expresses that he feels that Connie is drifting away from him, but doesn't want to hold her back from continuing to grow. After Connie reassures Steven that he is still her best friend, the two reaffirm their bond by fusing and winning a best-skater contest as Stevonnie.

In "Together Forever", Steven, facing the possibility of him and Connie drifting apart when she leaves for college, arranges a special date for her in order to propose marriage to her, figuring they can go to college together as Stevonnie. When he does, Connie, taken aback and although flattered, turns his proposal down for the time being due their young ages and wanting to continue being her own person, insisting to Steven that they have no need to rush into marriage. As her study break alarm goes off, she is willing to put studying aside for the moment to be with Steven, who replies that studying is important to her, and she replies that Steven is important to her. She then reluctantly returns home on Lion at Steven's insistence, still remaining friends with him.

In the following episode "Growing Pains", after calling Steven out of concern for him, and noticing his out-of-control powers, Connie insists that he seek medical help and arranges for her mother to examine him at the hospital. She also calls Steven's dad as well and urges him to come back from his tour with Sadie and Shep. When Steven's power start growing out of control due to him still being hurt by her declining his proposal, she quickly realizes the problem and convinces her mom that he should have his space, promising she'll be there for Steven whenever he's ready to talk to her.

In "Everything's Fine", Connie calls Steven just after he returns from Homeworld, but he dodges her questions about his condition and ends the call, much to her concern. Later, she visits the beach house after Steven's inner feelings project onto her phone, and participates in an intervention with the Gems and Greg to try and get Steven to open up about what's bothering him. During this, she becomes shocked to learn that Steven never told the Gems about going to the hospital, and is even more shocked when he reveals that he shattered Jasper and nearly did the same to White Diamond. She then watches as Steven finally melts down and transforms into a Gem Kaiju.

In "I Am My Monster", Connie assists the Gems and Greg in trying to calm down Steven and return him to normal. Teaming up with Lion once more, the two are first sent by Garnet to evacuate the town. Later, when the Gems and Greg, along with the recently arrived Diamonds and Spinel, all break down and blame themselves for Steven's transformation, Connie returns with Lion, and gives a speech that while they are partly to blame for it, Steven's condition and prior suppression of his feelings are also partly because he always putting others before himself, and that they all need to help Steven now just as he has always helped them. Everyone then embraces Steven in a group hug and assure him that he is loved no matter what, and Connie herself promises that everyone will take of him just as he has done for them for so long, and kisses his face. This finally causes Steven to return normal and he emotionally breaks down afterwards, with his family surrounding him.

In the final episode "The Future", which takes place a few months later, Connie visits Steven via Lion, and it's revealed that Steven has opted to leave Beach City to travel and possibly eventually settle down at his own place, with the two planning to meet each other during his travels with Lion's help. It's also heavily implied that the two have finally entered an official relationship as they share their first on-screen kiss just before Steven leaves, and Connie sees him off with Greg and the Gems.

Lion

Because they both care about Steven, Connie and Lion have a friendly connection to each other. Though originally hesitant, she quickly warmed up to and was fascinated by Lion. He seems to return the feeling, as shown when Steven was falling from the sky in "Ocean Gem", where Connie and Lion quickly teamed up in order to rescue him. Connie is also the fastest one to be accepted by Lion, trusting and allowing her to ride him. Steven and Connie often take Lion with them to travel to places in Beach City, and Lion has grown used to having Connie around. In "Buddy's Book", Connie compliments Lion's parking, showing how friendly they have grown from Connie's perspective.

In "Dewey Wins", after Connie frustratingly gives up trying to make Steven understand how much he hurt her by surrendering to Homeworld and asks Lion to take her home, Lion shoots Steven a disapproving glare before leaving with her, showing that he shares her anger at Steven over his surrender, as well as him treating the situation as nothing, and ignoring her feelings about it. Over the next few weeks afterward, Lion stays with Connie, presumably to give her comfort and companionship during her and Steven's estrangement, as well as teach Steven a hard lesson over him taking her and his other loved ones for granted; at some point during this time, Connie rides him to Steven's house in an attempt to reconcile in person after failing to do so over the phone, only to find that he'd gone on vacation. In "Kevin Party", Lion returns along with Connie, bringing her to Kevin's party and, following her and Steven's reconciliation, forgives him as well, and by "Lars of the Stars", he shown to once again be under Steven's care and on good terms with him.

In "Reunited", Connie rides Lion into battle against the Diamonds and sticks with him after her sword is destroyed.

In Steven Universe: The Movie, Lion retrieves Connie from space camp at Steven's direction to help stop Spinel, and she stays with him to help rescue Beach City's citizens from the effects of her Gem Injector.

In "Together Forever", Steven rides Lion to Connie's house, and he brings the two back to the beach where they met where Steven intends to propose to her. After the proposal fails, Connie rides Lion back home.

In "I Am My Monster" after Steven's PTSD, sense of purposelessness, and suppression of his emotions leads to his meltdown and transformation into a giant Gem Kaiju, Lion rallies with the rest of the Crystal Gems to help his master/charge. Teaming up once more with Connie, the two help evacuate the town, and then, after everyone embraces Steven with love, Lion warps her to the top of his head to give the final piece of love he needs.

In "The Future", Lion warps Connie to see Steven and is last seen with them as they make plans to meet up while Steven travels around the world and eventually settles elsewhere, with the two intending to use his warp powers to maintain their relationship.

Pearl

Thank you so much for letting me come on this mission, Pearl! It's such an honor to work alongside you.

—"Gem Hunt"
Sworn to the Sword 139

Pearl teaching Connie sword fighting.

It is shown that Connie and Pearl have many traits in common such as intelligence, attention to detail, and a tendency to be overly hard on themselves in the face of perceived failure. However, Pearl says in "Full Disclosure" that she doesn't understand human relationships when Connie is looking for Steven, though it was likely social ignorance to avoid answering where Steven was. The two share a mutually respectful mentor-student relationship since "Sworn to the Sword", in which she starts to call the latter "Ma'am". This was where she convinced Pearl to teach her sword fighting by appearing very passionate about staying by Steven's side to fight with him. This clearly struck a chord with Pearl and moved her to the point of tears, considering her own dedication to Rose Quartz.

"Gem Hunt" expounds on their relationship, showing that Connie views Pearl as a respected and beloved teacher whom she seeks to impress through finding the Gem monster. Even when she didn't defeat the monster on that mission, Pearl commends Connie for following her instructions during their subsequent encounter with Jasper. In "Crack the Whip", Connie tells Pearl and Garnet to take care while she continues training, causing the former to smile as it reminded her of herself. As implied and seen in "Gem Hunt" and "Legs From Here to Homeworld", respectively, Pearl talks to Connie's parents about her role on missions and apparently takes certain responsibility towards her.

Amethyst

I don't think I've ever had this much fun in one day!

—"Crack the Whip"

In "Crack the Whip", Amethyst is left in charge of Connie and Steven while Pearl and Garnet search for Jasper as Pearl had forgotten that Connie would be coming by for training that day. Amethyst tells Connie and Steven that they have the day off, though Connie and Steven decide to have a sparring session on the beach and try to get Amethyst to watch them. Amethyst notices Connie focusing on her stance and tells her to loosen up. When Connie confides in Amethyst and Steven about freezing up during her first mission, Amethyst tells her to stop overthinking things and states that in a real battle, she should follow her instincts. Afterward, Connie spends the remainder of the day having fun with Steven and Amethyst. Connie takes Amethyst's advice to heart by following her instincts during their later encounter with Jasper, fusing with Steven to form Stevonnie who manages to drive Jasper off. During the showdown, Amethyst, knowing how dangerous Jasper is, tells Connie and Steven to deal with one of Jasper's Gem monsters while Amethyst handles Jasper on her own. After her regeneration following being "poofed" by Jasper, Amethyst is surprised to find that Stevonnie had managed to drive off Jasper and that Connie and Steven were not in need of her help. This causes Amethyst to question her usefulness, despite Connie's assertion that her advice about following her own instincts allowed Connie to confront Jasper alongside Steven.

Garnet

Steven, I'm ready to train! I'm so glad we talked to Garnet. I really figured out what I needed to do!

—"Mindful Education"

Connie, like Steven, has high respect for Garnet, who returns the same feeling. In "Steven's Birthday", Garnet plays a song for Steven and Connie, whom Garnet identifies as Steven's best friend, to slow dance together to. In "Mindful Education", Garnet is excited to see Connie and Steven fight as Stevonnie. Garnet reveals a sign with Steven and Connie's names on one side, and then Stevonnie's on the other, and Steven takes this as a "fusion joke". This shows how open and supportive she is not only of Stevonnie but of the friendship Steven and Connie share as well. Connie still seems depressed by the time they arrive at the arena, and Garnet cheers them on as they fight while using the sign she made for them. After the fall, Steven finds Connie on the steps behind the area, near the warp pad, and decides to talk to her about the way she has been acting. Connie admits that she beat up a kid at school, and Steven is shocked, asking her to explain more about the situation. Connie claims that her training instinct just "kicked in" and her actions were accidental. Steven tells Connie not to think about it, but Garnet interrupts and takes the children to the beach to meditate with her as Stevonnie, showing her concern for the fusion extending to the two of them individually. Garnet meditates with Stevonnie and sings the song "Here Comes a Thought". With the visuals and influence Garnet provides, Connie finally agrees to confront her demons, taking Garnet's advice to heart.

Peridot

Connie has shown to get along and have a friendly relationship with Peridot as members of the New Crystal Gems. She went along with Peridot's idea to pretend to be Steven and Lapis' and Peridot's antics until they became too childish and arguing got to be too much for her. Connie spoke up against and convince them to continue their own roles, impressing Peridot. In "Change Your Mind", Connie and Peridot showed good teamwork in the battle against the Diamond Mech.

Lapis Lazuli

In "Ocean Gem", Connie is initially apprehensive of Lapis and her powers. This disappears by the episode "The New Crystal Gems", at which point she is aware that Lapis is Steven's friend. In their first meeting in person, Lapis didn't recognize Connie from the previous event, replaying "I almost drowned a lot of people" when Connie tries to remind Lapis that she almost drowned her. She is very aloof towards Connie at the beginning, but they eventually all agree to work together with Peridot and Pumpkin to watch Beach City while the other Crystal Gems are away. The group later begins to argue with each other on their abilities to play the roles of the Crystal Gems, Connie finding both Peridot and Lapis immature. They are eventually able to reconcile, however, when Connie delivers a speech to them about how they should handle their predicament, which Lapis is impressed by.

Bismuth

Connie was very happy that Bismuth forged and gave her a new sword to replace the sword used by Rose that had been broken in "Reunited".

Greg Universe

Look... humans and Gems... it's still some pretty new territory. You're gonna have to work it out together. And Connie? If you ever need to talk to another human being about this, you can always talk to me.

—Greg Universe, "We Need to Talk"

Connie is on good terms with Greg since "Fusion Cuisine" when her parents had given approval of Greg and Steven. He and Connie offered to accompany Steven on his mission no matter what danger they could face in "Ocean Gem", showing that they both care for Steven deeply. In "We Need to Talk", Greg is surprised that they could fuse into Stevonnie but does not seem to be completely shocked. He then says interaction between humans and Gems is still new, and that Steven and Connie will have to work with it. He also tells Connie that if she needs another human to talk to, he is there for her.

Lars Barriga

When Connie initially met Lars in "Bubble Buddies", she was weirded out by how he was acting to Steven. When meeting him again in "Lars of the Stars" however, she is shown to get along with him and helps him to fight against Emerald as Stevonnie, but got mad when he had a mental breakdown after thinking Sadie didn't care he had died and was trapped in space.

Jeff

Mindful Education 255

Appearing in "Mindful Education", Jeff is a student who goes to the same school as Connie. Connie unintentionally attacked and injured him instinctively after he accidentally bumped into her at school. This caused her to feel guilty about hurting him, burying her feelings instead of confronting them, which later caused her and Steven to have trouble maintaining synchronization as Stevonnie during their fusion training under Pearl and Garnet. With help from Garnet though, Connie eventually decided to deal with the problem head-on instead of trying to ignore it and apologized to Jeff. She was later relieved to discover that he held no hard feelings towards her and was surprised when she learned he wanted her to teach him some of her martial arts moves. On Connie's phone, it shows that she had taken a picture of them happy together, implying they have become friends.

Pebbles

Good-bye Pebbles. Wish us luck.

—"Change Your Mind"
Change Your Mind 157

After entering Pink's old room, Connie had a first met with Pebbles and thinks they are cute and friendly and in "Together Alone", she was happy that they built the furniture all night to remind them like the one from Steven's house. In "Change Your Mind", she tells the Pebbles goodbye that she and Steven will save Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl and use the leg ship to head back to their home planet Earth.

White Diamond

Connie continues to support and parrot Steven in her encounter and fight with White Diamond. White Diamond considers Connie to be another pet, but their relationship after Steven convinced White Diamond to embrace her flaws is unknown.

Yellow Diamond

Connie's opinion was disregarded by Yellow Diamond when the latter confronts Blue Diamond to take Steven and Connie back to the tower. The mentioned disregard is similar to Blue Diamond's expressed prejudice to Connie by seeing her as a "pet". Since this period, Connie has given insight supporting Steven's goals, which were enough to be considered and agreed with by Yellow and Blue even if they were to combat White Diamond to achieve these goals.

Blue Diamond

I think she means me.

—"Together Alone"
Change Your Mind 141

Connie first meets Blue Diamond in "Reunited". In "Together Alone", Blue sees Connie as Steven/Pink's "pet", a sharp contrast to Blue's general view on the humans both in the Zoo and towards Greg. Still, the two helped Steven to rescue the Crystal Gems in "Change Your Mind".

Jasper

Connie first encountered Jasper on her first mission in the Great North, being left in awe of the Quartz Gem's strength and combat prowess. As of "Crack the Whip", Connie appears to share the Crystal Gems' mutual dislike of Jasper and willingly fused with Steven in order to defeat her.

Kevin

Connie first encounters Kevin as Stevonnie in "Alone Together". Since their first meeting, both Steven and Connie hold a negative opinion of him, an attitude carrying over to "Beach City Drift". While Steven's dislike of Kevin is overt and hostile, Connie's is more subdued and internal. While racing him as Stevonnie, Connie is the first to realize how obsessed they are in getting back at him, and they both decide to let go of their anger and finish the race for themselves. Although they ultimately lose, they accept the loss with grace, thus angering Kevin, who yells that they are obsessed with him as they take their leave.

In "Kevin Party", Kevin invites Connie and Steven to his party in the hopes that they can make it an event that everyone will remember by fusing into Stevonnie. Unknown to him at the time, the two had been estranged for the past few weeks over Steven's surrender to Homeworld and both only accept the invitation in the hopes of working things out. However, upon seeing each other at the party, tension and uncertainty between them (due to Steven believing that Connie's new look was a sign that she had decided to move on from him and Connie presumably being uncertain of what Steven thinks of her after unintentionally leaving him in the dark during their estrangement) prevent them from reconciling immediately. When Kevin learns of the situation, he, misinterpreting that Steven and Connie were a couple, attempts to get them back together so they can fuse, convincing an emotionally vulnerable and desperate Steven to play it cool and act like life is going well for him without Connie, so that she'll be desperate enough come to him. The advice backfires, agitating Connie to the point where she believes that Steven has given up on making amends with her after being unintentionally ignored for so long, and has decided not only to permanently cut her from his life but to also replace her with Kevin as his best friend, and nearly leaves distraught at this. After Steven stops her from leaving, and the two finally reconcile, Kevin attempts to get them to fuse, but they instead decide to take their leave on Lion, though not before thanking Kevin for his help and complimenting him on the party, much to his anger.

Trivia

  • Kat Morris created Connie's character.[4]
  • According to a sketch in Steven Universe: Art & Origins, her name was originally supposed to be Priyanka, which was later repurposed into her mother's name.
  • Connie is likely of Tamil background. Her surname, Maheswaran, is a Tamil name derived from "Mahesh", another name for the Hindu deity Shiva.[5]
    • In Hindu faith, Shiva is sometimes referred to with the title "Lord of the Universe".[6]
    • This may be a reference to Connie's relationship with Steven.
  • Connie is named after a high school friend of Rebecca Sugar.[7]
  • Given that Steven's birthday is in August, Connie's birthday would be somewhere in November.
  • Connie's outfit and fighting style were inspired by Kalaripayattu.
    • She wields a sword resembling the Khanda, a sword typically used in the style.
    • Her hairstyle is a braid typically worn by female Kalaripayattu practitioners.
  • In the episode "Sworn to the Sword", Connie is seen holding her sword with her right hand during training; but uses her left hand when she fights Pearl with Steven.
  • According to Rebecca Sugar, if Connie were a Gem, she would be a teal Gem, as she has the diplomatic skills of blue Gems, but she also is able to take action, so she would be a Gem that would be between blue and green, color-wise.[8]
  • Despite saying her family moves around a lot, she has kept the same home for well over three years as of Steven Universe Future.
  • In "Nightmare Hospital", it is revealed that she hates the punishment abacus, which is what her parents use to calculate the length of punishments for her.
  • In "Winter Forecast", Connie says "itadakimasu", a Japanese word said before eating. She has stated that her father travels, so Connie may know more than one language. In reality, Connie's voice actress, Grace Rolek, is of Japanese descent.
  • At some point following her fallout with Steven in the "Dewey Wins" and before their reconciliation in "Kevin Party", Connie cut or had someone cut her waist-length hair down to a chin-length bob with bangs. According to Grace Rolek, she may have done this as a way of relieving herself of some the emotional baggage from Steven's surrender to Homeworld and their fight and estrangement following his return, as well as a way of "moving forward" to invest in her personal growth independently from having a magical best friend.[3] Connie herself confirmed in the podcast that she felt she needed a change from her signature long hair and that taking a new short-haired look would allow her to open up a new side of herself.
  • Her favorite fictional books are The Spirit Morph Saga.
    • Her favorite show is Under the Knife, a satire about hospitals she watches with Steven.
  • She might be a gamer, as seen in the short "Video Chat". Her laptop has Colonization V (a spoof of the real-life video game Civilization V). She has Empires & Eras II and Conqueror Kings II (spoofs of Age of Empires II and Crusader Kings II, respectively) and a Grid (a spoof of the popular gaming platform Steam).
  • In "Gem Hunt", she carries Rose's Sword on her back with the hilt over her shoulder. This is similar to many anime characters who carry giant swords the same way such as Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach and Guts from Berserk.
  • Connie appears in the title sequence as Greg's Van drives by, causing a breeze that she looks towards. She holds the book A Wrinkle in Time, and is wearing a sky blue sundress, a pale tan sunhat, and orange boots.
    • In the second intro, Connie looks towards the road with a smile and pops out of the street and runs to the Crystal Temple, wearing the frames of her glasses until she reaches the Crystal Temple and lies in front of Rose's Sword. She wields Rose's Sword, holds an unknown book with a bookmark inside, and wears shorts along with a sleeveless T-shirt.
  • Connie has been directly referred to as Steven's girlfriend in commercials in Portugal[9] as well as numerous other European countries. While this is literally true (she is a girl and Steven's friend), their relationship doesn't turn romantic until midway through Steven Universe Future.
    • Steven and Connie have been confirmed by Rebecca Sugar to be in love, and that Connie is a little more forward about it than Steven. However, they do not officially enter a romantic relationship until midway through Steven Universe Future.[10]
  • A character with an appearance similar to Connie appears as a background character in the Japanese anime film Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade.
  • She is the first and only known member of the Crystal Gems who is fully human.
    • She and Lion are the only members who are not at least partially a Gem (though Lion inherited his powers from a Gem).
  • After coming out as bisexual during Pride Month 2021, Connie's voice actress Grace Rolek has stated in response to the question of whether Connie is LGBTQ+, that she can be interpreted with any sexuality or gender identity people see her identifying with.
